SFO thrilled by the prospect of Northern Nights of Music and Song

Shetland road verge in Summer

The Scottish Fiddle Orchestra’s Northern Nights Tour will see us visit Moray, Orkney and Shetland over the course of a week in July 2018.

For details of ticket sales and prices, please scroll to the bottom of this article.

The tour commences with a concert in Elgin Town Hall on Saturday 21 July 2018 at 7.30pm.

After spending that night in Moray, our tour bus will then take us west along the A96 and north up the A9 to Scrabster for the ferry transfer to Stromness in Orkney on 22 July.

The following evening, we play a concert at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall (Monday, 23 July at 7.30pm). Tuesday evening – 24 July at 7.30pm – sees us perform in the town’s St Magnus Cathedral and we’ll then catch the 11pm ferry from Kirkwall to Lerwick.

Arriving in Shetland at breakfast time on 25 July, our concert at Clickimin Complex Main Hall is at 7.30pm that (Wednesday) evening.

We depart Shetland on the evening ferry on 26 July and head back to mainland Scotland at Aberdeen. We plan to play a free concert on board the MV Hjaltland on this return journey, partly as a “thank you” to NorthLink for sponsoring our tour.

We expect to take about 60 players on the tour, including conductor, Blair Parham.

Our popular guest singers Colette Ruddy (mezzo soprano) and Dennis Haggerty (tenor) will also be with us. Each concert will include contributions from local pipers and fiddlers.

Commenting on the SFO’s plans, Blair said: “It’s exciting to go on tour with the SFO. These are all places we have visited before – Shetland in 2010 and Orkney many times but most recently in 2016. We have not played a concert in Elgin since the 1990s.

Of course, all these places have strong fiddle music traditions and our programme will highlight and celebrate that fact.

We’ll focus on supporting local charities at each concert and we’re already grateful for the high level of support we have received from local musicians. We’re looking forward to combining with them to make each performance an unforgettable night of music, song and laughter.

While we concentrate on fiddle music in all shapes and forms, it has become a tradition for the SFO to mix fiddles and bagpipes in arrangements of some of Scotland’s most iconic music. That’s probably where our uniqueness lies. The sound it produces is stirringly powerful and a memorable experience.”

Tickets will be on sale soon and more details will follow. In the meantime, any enquiries can be directed via this website or our Facebook page.
