In The Fair City – The SFO Live in Perth Concert Hall (February 2016)

Recorded at the SFO’s concert in Perth Concert Hall in February 2016, the orchestra pays tribute to “The Fair City” of Perth – itself steeped in Scottish history and a stone’s throw from Scotland’s ancient capital, Scone (where Scotland’s early Kings were crowned).

Under conductor, Blair Parham, and leader, Bill Cook, you will find here all the essential ingredients for which the SFO is famous all over the world. Foot-tapping reels, bouncy jigs and haunting airs are all part of the instrumental mix, as fans have come to expect. Solo fiddler, Yla Steven, contributes with a rendition of “The Lament for the Death of the Reverend Archie Beaton”, a composition by SFO founder, John Mason.

Songs are provided by local lass, Colette Ruddy, and Dennis Haggerty from sunny Greenock, both performers who are well-known to SFO audiences. The DVD format provides the Clark sisters – Marnie and Catriona (also SFO regulars) – with an opportunity to demonstrate their energetic dancing skills.

No SFO concert is complete without selections involving the pipes and, on this occasion, we are joined by Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, one of the country’s finest piping ensembles. They feature on Keltic Odyssey, MacPherson’s Farewell and Scotland the Brave.

Robert Lovie, as compere – and celebrating his first anniversary with the orchestra at this concert – keeps the entertainment flowing, ensuring that this recording captures Scotland’s National Fiddle Orchestra at its best.
