It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that the orchestra must announce the death of it’s Founder and Musical Director John Mason MBE.
John passed away peacefully in his sleep at Ayr Hospice in the early hours of Saturday 22nd January, after bravely battling illness for several years.
John founded the orchestra in 1980 and since then he has entertained thousands of people with his skill, passion and unique style. In 1987 he was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace, in honour of his dedication to music and in raising many thousands of pounds for charity. He wrote countless tunes and arranged many more, many of which are now ‘standards’ in Traditional music.
Those who came into contact with him, could not help but be touched by his warmth, his wit and his passion for music and life. Our thoughts are with Hilary, Peter, Rognvald, Jamie and the rest of the family.
Not only is his passing a great loss to all in Scotland and it’s musical community, but we, each member of the orchestra, have lost a real friend.
We will all miss you John.
